Good morning, Flippers!

If you're into finding awesome stuff and turning it into cold, hard cash, you're in the right place. Our weekly newsletter is your ticket to uncovering awesome opportunities for automotive flipping across the country. From hidden gems to trending items, we've got the inside scoop on how to make money and how to have fun doing it. Let's make some serious dough together!

Much like a Smörgåsbord, this week’s newsletter is wonderful and full of variety!

Warning - some Swedish, German, French, and/or Japanese elbow grease may be required.

  • 1966 Volvo Amazon 122S 5-Speed - Oregon City, OR - $7,800

  • The Volvo “Amazon” was a strange vehicle - a Swedish commuter vehicle, built in the late 50s, with the styling cues of early 50s American cars, built with the intention of woo-ing American buyers. There are still thousands of Amazons cruising American roads today, a true testament to the durability of this particular model.

  • This truly appears to be a great deal, and makes the #1 spot on the newsletter for a good reason - I really want to buy it myself…

  • 130+ examples of the Volvo Amazon have been auctioned on Bring A Trailer to date. In recent years, these cars have crossed the block between $5,700 (for a non-running project car) and $40,000 (for a full resto-mod example).

The Volvo Amazon - coupe, sedan, shooting brake, wagon, OR race car…

  • 1975 Mercedes-Benz 220D - Eugene, OR - $5,500

  • There’s no way to minimize your carbon footprint while also maintaining your title of “Coolest Dad in the Neighborhood” quite like a 1973 Mercedes-Benz 220D. Achieving 30mpg in a steel-bodied luxury car from 50 years ago is a downright miracle.

  • The OM615 4-cylinder diesel engine doesn’t have a turbo, so it ain’t fast. While it only produces a measly 59hp and 93 ft-lb of torque, this powerplant WILL win reliability contests, and can probably be kept running forever with a basic set of hand tools.

  • 14 of these 220D models have sold on Bring A Trailer over the last few years, bringing in between $3,400 and $18,500.

As you can see above, Covid had an enormous impact on the used car market…

  • 1995 Renault Twingo 5-Speed - Vancouver, Canada - $5,000

  • The Renault Twingo is a fairly common sight for the average European motorist. To the average American motorist, however, it’s a bizarre occurrence.

  • With its fuel injected OHV 1.2L C3G engine, the Twingo is bound to run reliably and efficiently for years to come.

  • Only one Renault Twingo has been listed & sold on Bring A Trailer, selling for over $9,000. This Canadian example seems to be in even better shape than the singular BaT auction example.

Being able to say “I listed the second-ever Twingo on BaT” would be pretty cool…

  • 2006 Mazda Miata 6-Speed - Bozeman, MT - $9,500

  • A wise man once said, “The answer to every single question in the automotive world is simple - Miata.”

  • With less than 50k miles, resale-red paint, and a Bose sound system, this thing will keep you entertained for at least another 200k miles without any major problems.

  • Miatas are typically one of the easiest cars to sell, because nearly every person in America has either owned a Miata and loved it, or knows someone who owns a Miata and how much they love it.

  • Over 30 NC-Miatas have sold on Bring A Trailer, fetching prices between $10,350 (97,000 miles) and $29,250 (8,000 miles).

Have you ever met someone who said “I don’t like Miatas”? Yeah, I didn’t think so…

Quote of the Day

“The Americans lecture the world on democracy and then won’t let me turn the traction control off!”

Jeremy Clarkson, 2009
It wouldn’t be a Flip Forecast without at least a couple items that you should probably consider holding on to…

Here’s a few potential keepers:
  • The E39 540i with the 6-speed manual transmission is one of the greatest daily driver vehicles of all time. Don’t let the 200k miles scare you, as these M62 4.0L V8 engines are known for their longevity.

  • When was the last time you had an opportunity to purchase a metallic blue 6-speed German sports sedan for this cheap?…

  • All you have to do it read the description and you’ll be convinced. The K1100LT is one of the coolest touring bikes to ever come out of a German factory.

  • One of the best automotive articles of all time was written about a Porsche 914 - A Few Things to Know Before Stealing my 914.

  • Like a German Miata, minus all the practicality. I bet they’re more fun to own than they are to steal…
